This commodity marketing plan was developed specifically for the Farm Business Development Initiative but can be used independently.

 

The training will provide the farm manager with the skills necessary to:

  •  Develop a financial plan using actual costs/prices/yields
  •  Learn what factors affect each commodity market and how to use that information to make pricing decisions
  •  Assess financial risk and implement strategies to reduce exposure
  •  Develop an action plan and evaluation criteria

 

Agenda:

The consulting takes approximately 3 months depending upon the availability of the farm manager.

 

  • Financial - week 1 - gather information required to analyze the farm's financial situation. Develop projections and identify benchmarks and risks.
  • Industry & Marketing Analysis - week 2 thru 6 - discuss what factors affect each commodity market and how to use that information to make pricing strategies/decisions. Identify where to gather market intelligence.
  • Production & Production Risk - week 7 - identify financial risks and develop strategies to reduce exposure including crop insurance, government programs and private insurers.
  • Risk Management Strategies - week 8 - identify the types of contracts to be used to price commodities and develop crop specific strategies.
  • Action Plan - week 9 - develop an action plan to identify targets, timetables and who is responsible for implementation and follow-up.
  • Evaluation - week 10 - identify what skills and strategies were expected and if any areas need improvement.

Duration of training is dependant on the needs of the client to a maximum of 40 hours.  These 40 hours can be spread out over a period of 3 months.

Agenda:

  • Discussion of filing and record keeping methods
  • Create a datafile based on setup information provided by client
  • Process withdrawal, deposit, payable, receivable and inventory transactions
  • Client will be trained in Payroll  if required in their business operation
  • Process reports required for filing of government required remissions such as GST and AgriStability
  • Reconciliations of bank, credit cards and loans

Review the reports that can be generated by AgExpert and discuss their importance and usefulness in the decision making process

Review year end process and functions to ensure that financial information presented for tax filing is accurate and complete

The total duration of the course is 45 hours, 9 hours in online synchronous workshops and the rest on a working grain farm.

                                                                                                                                              J-MAS Market Masters - Crop Merchandising Course 2014-15

The full J-MAS Merchandising Course consists of Eleven segments.  A minimum of Seven "core" segments must be completed in order to recieve Certificate of Completion.

The Full Course is recommended (price is the same either way) and as long as one Farm Operation Partner is registered in the course, any number of Employees may partake in any/all segments for free.  Employees will recieve a Certificate of Attendance for each segment they attended.

J-MAS will tailor agendas to each operations needs and is willing to allow almost any combination of Workshop/Farm sessions to ensure maximum benefit is attained.

Core Segments will require approximately 15 hours to complete.                                       Completeing All Segments will require approximately 25 hours.

Pending how farm operation chooses to proceed, the course may take a weekend (2-3 Farm Sessions) or as long as 4-5 months (8-10 bi-weekly Workshops).  More likely though, a combination of both over a 1-2 month period.
