Certified Educator Training Program

Become a Holistic Management Certified Educator

Holistic Management Educators play an important role in support of HMI’s mission to educate people to manage land for a sustainable future. Most of them teach workshops, consult with farmers & ranchers and practice Holistic Management in their own operations.  While anyone can enroll in the training program, it’s primarily designed for land stewards, professional educators, and consultants who want to attain the highest level of competency and teach others to reap the benefits of Holistic Management. HMI is the ONLY organization that provides this rigorous training. You can find a current list of Educators in our community map and directory.

We offer an individualized two-year Holistic Management Certified Educator Training Program. This program is overseen by HMI, which engages experienced and knowledgeable Certified Educators to mentor the candidates through the program.

This self-directed training program provides a solid foundation in effectively facilitating and coaching the principles and practice of Holistic Management.

Each individualized program covers the same content areas and has similar requirements, but varies in structure. You can individualize your training by choosing where and how you will learn and take advantage of the international travel and exposure that increase your learning opportunities.

HMI staff will work with you to carefully select your mentoring team to maximize your learning experience. You will also receive support from HMI staff throughout your two-year program as well as a thorough evaluation of your learning portfolio and recommendations for further learning.

Create the Farm or Ranch of Your Dreams with our Getting Started Online Learning Series

Why online learning from HMI?

HMI has been helping farmers, ranchers and land stewards develop and manage sustainable profitable enterprises for thirty years. We accomplish this by teaching Holistic Management Whole Farm /Ranch Planning, which addresses the environmental, economic, and social issues farmers and ranchers face today.

Whether you are a beginning farmer or a rancher with years of conventional agricultural experience, you’ll benefit from this series. Holistic Management is an effective, adaptive system built upon a value-based decision making process that has proven to be effective regardless of production focus or geography. Graziers with thousands of acres, as well as vegetable farmers with less than an acre, have all reaped the benefits of practicing Holistic Management. You can too.

Now you can learn Holistic Management from anywhere in the world. Our innovative Getting Started Online Series will teach you everything you need to know to build the farm or ranch of your dreams. The series consists of five individual courses.

How Much Can You Afford to Pay for Land?

How Much Can You Afford to Pay for Land?

Durée du programme :

Un jour ou moins

Available upon request.

Entire course is 3 - 4 hours in length so can be provided at various times during the day.

Programme :

Hour 1: Participants will study land value changes over time, what the experts say is driving recent price increases and the evidence behind this rationale.

Next participants will explore six different considerations in assessing the value of land; carrying cost, leverage vs. cash, weighted average cash outflow for capital, net operating profit, return on investment and additional costs of expansion. Students will understand how these considerations are having an effect on land values in their local area and their own ability to purchase land.

Hour 2: Using the provided workbook, participants will put what they have just learned into practice through a case study exercise including what-if? scenarios on variable factors such as interest rate and net operating profit. Students will be given opportunity to discuss how to make decisions based on the information presented in the case study.

The second part of Hour 2 switches gears to examine considerations specific to each individual farm’s financial position that dictate How Much Can You Afford to Pay for Land?; Working capital, Leverage and Debt Servicing.

Hour 3+: Using the provided workbook, participants will put what they have learned into practice through a full realistic case study exercise. Most importantly, students will have an opportunity to learn and discuss with each other how to use the information to make decisions on their farm.

Coût :

$500

Cost of $500 includes workshop and accompanying workbook. Does not include meals, travel or accomodation.

Public cible :

Those actively farming/ranching and looking to expand their land base.

In this session we will examine who is purchasing land for "ridiculous" prices across your province and how they are doing it. The land purchase decision involves considerations at both the farm and market level. We will not only explore key valuation factors in determining what should be considered a fair price for land but also the financial indicators specific to your farm that dictate whether a potential land purchase is your best investment. We will put all these calculations to work through practical and realistic case study examples. Participants will come away from the session with a tool set to evaluate market land price and their own farm’s ability to pay for land.
