Programs offered lead to a MSc and PhD degrees. Animals of significance to food production are the major interest and research emphasis. Fields of study include animal welfare, breeding and genetics, animal nutrition, animal physiology, and growth and metabolism. Collaboration with other departments offer unique opportunities encompassing food, nutritional and veterinary science. A combination of advanced course work and research projects allows students the opportunity to develop skills and the intellectual curiosity that may further qualify students for a leadership role within the animal industry or serve as prerequisites for doctoral studies.

Includes biochemistry, behaviour, genetics, nutrition, physiology, breeding, production and management of domestic livestock and poultry, other avian species, fish and other marine animals, laboratory animals, and wildlife species. Programs provide a strong foundation in the scientific disciplines underlying growth and reproduction in animals and how they respond to a range of environmental systems and constraints. Emphasis may also include the practical husbandry of animals, primarily those used for food production, but also of companion and captive species.

Programs offer unique exposure to concepts of evaluation that emphasize the interrelationships between biophysical, human and cultural resources. A broad array of research methods, projects and practices are explored, equipping students to be leaders in rural and urban communities. Land use planning is an important component of some of these programs, with an orientation to bio-physical processes and their application for land use planning at regional and local scales. Many programs in these areas of study are professionally accredited and recognized worldwide. The human element of society is paramount, preparing students with teaching techniques, interpersonal communications, technology transfer approaches, communication technologies and international extension programs. These programs are open to qualified graduates from a wide variety of disciplines including agriculture, home economics, sociology, communication, education, health, medicine, and economics. Opportunities exist in these areas of specialization at both the MSc and PhD levels.

Alfred College offers a Diploma in Agriculture that has been designed to develop qualified technicians to work in agricultural and agricultural related enterprises. Graduates will have the required knowledge and skills for consulting and business management. The program is conducted for a minimum of two years, based on a solid understanding of agriculture and management, by completing a variety of optional courses that lead to obtaining a specialization certificate. Theoretical and practical courses give the students the necessary tools to face any changes that may occur in the industry. At the end of the second semester, students have the option to participate in a placement within the agricultural sector, or within an agricultural-related sector. It is possible to apply to this program part-time or to apply for one particular course. Specializations that are offered within the Diploma of Agriculture:? Rural Engineering?
